Company

Roger Mears Architects was set up in May 1980 and the majority of its work has been gained by personal recommendation from satisfied clients. The office is based in Islington, but jobs have ranged as far afield as Dorset, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Wales. Most work is with listed buildings (whether Grade I, II* or II) and particular expertise has been developed in dealing with them.  In 2015 Sarah Khan and Alan Brown joined Roger as partners to form a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP).

Roger Mears was, for 18 years, Guardian of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), whose philosophy of conservative repair informs the approach to all work, and members of staff are encouraged to attend courses run by the SPAB.  In every project close attention is paid to detail, with the aim of complementing existing buildings and using the best of traditional and, where appropriate, modern materials. Care for the environment is a major concern and influences the choice of construction – for example using locally sourced natural materials, environmentally friendly products and high levels of insulation. Daylight and sunlight are encouraged into buildings, often by the use of conservatories or glazed lantern lights.

The practice aims for a relaxed and informal relationship with clients, whilst maintaining an efficient, professional approach.  By developing close working relationships with all parties involved in the process, including consultants, contractors and craftspeople, we find we can achieve the highest quality results in terms of finished buildings and client satisfaction. As a consequence of our overall aims, which are to do what is best for a building as well as for our clients, we have generally found that local authority conservation officers and English Heritage caseworkers are very receptive to proposals we submit for planning and listed building consent.
