c. £80k pa plus benefits package

Flexible location - hybrid working with regular attendance in the London SW1 office.

When it comes to building services engineering design, you’re not just a recognised technical expert in your field - you’re unfazed, however complex the challenge is. Used to managing a complicated stakeholder environment, you’re calm under pressure, have the confidence to challenge the status quo and are willing to drive optimised solutions through processes that explore positive compromise. Put simply, you have what it takes to lead critically important work on the largest building restoration project ever undertaken in the UK.

A truly unique building, the Palace of Westminster - a world famous icon of democracy - needs essential restoration and renewal to preserve it for future generations. Covering 34 acres, and the size of more than 1,000 houses, there are 1,100 rooms, 100 staircases, three miles of passageways, four floors and 65 different levels. We’re currently carrying out thousands of hours of complex building surveys and investigations in order to inform future decision making on the work that’s needed. We’ve already engaged teams of architects, engineers, project managers and contractors who will shape the future direction of the work. As part of our structure for success we are looking to expand our Design Management team with the appointment of a Senior Engineering Design Manager.

Via matrix management with other Delivery Authority teams, we’ll rely on you to manage the delivery of a range of designs, technical studies, solutions and outcomes. You’ll also be responsible for coordinating emerging design solutions with technical, quality, cost, schedule and value for money requirements, as well as managing design change and technical assumptions & risks. Managing a team, leading the development of technical briefs, developing and implementing policies, processes and initiatives and using your expertise to resolve or respond to any technical design or other issues that arise – these are just some aspects of this high profile role.

To succeed, you’ll need to be a Chartered Member/Fellow of a professional institution such as CIBSE, IET, IMechE and have a degree in building services or another relevant building design biased mechanical or electrical engineering related discipline. You’ll also need a successful track record delivering a similar role for multi-disciplinary teams of building designers delivering large/complex building construction projects.

Indeed, experience of leading and developing teams to deliver coordinated high quality work on time and in an efficient manner is key, as is a highly organised approach and skilled judgment in anticipating and solving complex technical problems.

Familiarity with the relevant legislation is a must have too, together with an excellent understanding of the RIBA Plan of Work 2020 and BSRIA’s Design Framework for Building Services (BG6) document. What’s more, you have substantial knowledge of professional agreements and scopes of professional services for large/complex building construction type projects and an excellent understanding of the application of BIM and associated systems & software.
