Penguin recruitment are delighted to be supporting one of the leading Planning and Environmental practices in the UK in their search to recruit a Planning Director.

My client is recognised as leaders in their field of practice and their unique multi-disciplinary team of Chartered Town Planner, Planning Lawyers and Environmental Lawyers operate from their Gatwick office.

The multi-disciplinary team of planning lawyers work along side consultancy colleagues to deliver consistent results on several complex projects and matters. The Planning consultancy is one of the largest teams of chartered planners in England.

The Role

My client is seeking a Director of Planning to join the Planning team currently comprised of two partners, trainees, and three chartered planners within the companies wider Real Estate department consisting of over 107 staff and partners based out of other offices across the South.

The team operates a wide range of contentious and non-contentious work across the general disciplines of planning and environmental law, including infrastructure work (highway agreements, drainage/sewerage agreements) and statutory/common law nuisance, and also operate other regulatory regimes such as health and safety.

Candidate requirements

The role is to operate as an effective member of the Planning Group. To support the Head of Planning Consultancy team, as well as supporting partners and other members of the Legal Planning team as required. You will be responsible for your own caseload of work and assist senior members of the team on their caseload and support the Partners in particular in delivering high levels of service!

The key criteria for the ideal candidate will include:

  • Chartered member of the RTPI.
  • Solid experience of Planning within the UK including a good understanding of relevant legislation and case law.
  • Experience of managing and developing client relationships.
  • A commercial and pragmatic approach to advice and negotiations is highly important.
  • Ability to deal with a wide range of clients with different objectives including understanding the commercial objectives of the client.
  • Ability to delegate tasts as appropriate and coach other individuals.
  • Experience in the handling of major planning applications.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with local planning authorities, both to secure prompt and sympathetic handling of applications and, on accession, instructions from such authorities to act on their behalf.
  • To help ensure that all members of the Planning Consultancy team keep up to date with developments in planning law and policy and other matters relevant to their continuing education and comply with the training requirements of the RTPI.
  • Competent IT skills including Outlook, Word and time recording systems.
