The Houses of Parliament Restoration and Renewal Programme has been established to tackle the significant work that needs to be done to protect and preserve the heritage of the Palace of Westminster and ensure it can continue to serve as home to the UK Parliament in the 21st century. This is an enormous and unprecedented undertaking, which is expected to be the most complex renovation programme of any single building the UK has ever seen.
The work will be carried out under a two-tier governance system with a Sponsor Body and a Delivery Authority. Under this structure, the Sponsor Body will be the single client accountable to Parliament. The role of the Delivery Authority is to deliver the Programme to the scope, budget and timescale set down by and agreed with the Sponsor Board.
The Head of Architecture is a senior leader within the team holding oversight of the architecture and conservation function. As well as supporting on all enabling projects they will help shape the architectural vision for a future Palace of Westminster, ensuring that vision is maintained throughout the different phases of the programme.
Working closely with the Design Management function to produce specific and measurable technical briefs for the supply chain and ensure design work progress in line with expected quality. Also working with the Head of Technical Assurance, responsible for assurance of all architectural technical studies, solutions and outcomes in the R&R Programme, ensuring compliance with requirements and technical standards. Working with the Head of Engineering, other disciplines and stakeholders to ensure cohesive design solutions, of high quality, leveraging innovation and delivering value for money.
To be successful in the role you will have a degree in architecture or other design-related discipline, be a Chartered Member/Fellow of an appropriate professional institution such as RIBA and also be ARB registered.
Proven experience in a similar Head of Function level role, developing standards and guidelines for diverse activities, for a large organisation, working on large or complex projects or multi-billion-pound programmes.
Demonstrable experience of working in historic buildings including conservation principles and application of UK methods.
