Job Details

George and James Architects is seeking an architect to join its team in West Sussex, UK.

We design buildings that we can all be proud of – happy healthy places that are kind to humans and kind to the planet. And now we need another architect to help us in our mission.

We could say it’s an exciting opportunity for you, and we hope it is. But more than that, we want it to be a meeting – and expanding – of minds, a way for our practice to grow, a chance for all of us to absorb new ideas and get rid of old ones. We want to learn from you, and we hope you’ll learn from us.

You’ll need to hit the ground running and pick up the reins of our smaller (but no less important) residential projects almost straight away. You’ll be a doer as well as a thinker. You won’t be fazed by much, and you’ll be as comfortable chatting with planners and builders as with our lovely clients. You’ll be a good listener, too.

In short, you’ll be a people person, a detail person and a big-picture person. And you’ll be an architect, with all the qualifications, high standards and understanding of processes that implies.

We hope you’ll be a dab hand at Vectorworks (definitely 2D and perhaps 3D too), SketchUp, Photoshop, InDesign and more. You’ll have computer rendering skills, but still happily pick up a pencil, sketch away, and get your ideas across by hand.

You’ll have read every word of our website and be as interested in our story as we are in yours.

We hope none of that is too much to ask.

You might not want to work a standard week, and that’s fine by us. We know that you’ve got a life outside of work, and we won’t ask more of you than we ask of ourselves.

We’re about to move into a new studio – an old milking shed – not far from Midhurst in the heart of the South Downs. It’s a little off the beaten track, so you’ll need to be able to get there under your own steam, whether that’s on two wheels or four.

You won’t need to be at the studio every working day. But however much we love Zoom, we love sitting around a table even more, and we’re very much looking forward to our new studio being a place to gather and a place to put our heads together.

If you’ve read this far and you like the sound of us, that’s a great sign. Now we’d like to know more about you.

So here’s what we’d like you to do: put together a 60-second video message telling us why you want to join us, and why we should bring you on board. And then send us a link to download it from your choice of file sharing service to jobs@georgeandjames.co.uk with your name and phone number (but please no CVs, portfolios or anything else – that’ll be for later).

Still reading? We can’t wait to hear from you.

Company

We design buildings that we can all be proud of – happy, healthy places that are kind to you and kind to the planet.

Every building should make you feel good – whether it's your home, your workplace, or perhaps a farm shop, cafe or yoga studio. It should be simple and functional, beautiful yet understated.

We listen before we do anything else. We come to your project with open eyes and ears, and with honesty, curiosity and care. Our clients love what we do, and they also love the way we do it. They tell us we're calm, attentive, full of ideas, and a joy to work with.

We've now put down roots in Sussex and we work from the old pump room of a converted dairy not too far from Midhurst, after many years based in London. We love working close to home and getting to know our patch, but our projects still take us all over London, the South East, and beyond.
