This is a rare opportunity to join the GLA’s Planning Unit, one of the UK’s most exciting planning teams. The G6 Urban Designer position sits within the GLA Growth Strategies and Urban Design Team – part of the London Plan team which works closely with Development Management.

As an Urban Designer you will be developing unique strategic scale urban design frameworks, providing design support on London’s most significant development projects, and helping to shape London’s future. This role is driven by the need to implement the Mayor’s ‘Good Growth by Design’ agenda by championing good design in both policy and development management workstreams.

This is an important supporting role in the team, and will involve:

These interpret planning policy as strategic urban design guidance, and help to steer the development of areas with significant growth potential. This area of work will include analysing study areas, developing concepts for change at a strategic level, master planning, and ensuring stakeholders are properly engaged throughout the process
  • supporting the growth strategies and urban design team in using design-led solutions to support London boroughs in resolve complex spatial planning issues, for example over increased densities, combining land uses, and intensifying industrial land
  • providing urban design advice to GLA staff on development management, local development documents and other mayoral concerns, including those arising from the proposals of other organisations
  • monitoring, providing advice on, and research into, current and emerging strategic planning matters and urban design-related issues facing London

What we are looking for:

To be successful, you’ll need to be passionate about urban design and planning in London. Whilst a track record of achievement in a comparable role is good, applicants with a can-do attitude, who share our excitement for delivering the Mayors vision for London's future, and feel capable of dealing with complex strategic urban design and planning issues are encouraged to apply.

This role offers career progression opportunities, and you will be supported to develop your skills and knowledge in the strategic planning and development of London, urban design practice and policy, project management, and communication and presentation skills.
