Reporting to Project Architects and Project Leaders, working with Mentors and Trainers.  Duties and responsibilities:

The Apt Apprenticeship:

  • Architectural education is divided into three parts. RIBA Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3.
  • The Degree Apprenticeship course at London South Bank University (LSBU) is a Level 6 apprenticeship and gives the apprentice a RIBA Part 1 Exemption and a BA (Hons) Degree in Architecture.
  • The apprentice is employed at Apt Works Limited and is a student at LSBU 1 day a week from September 2021.
  • The Part 1 degree under LSBU is a 4-year undertaking, location is Southwark Campus.
  • The reward is an undergrad degree of Architecture BA (Hons) the professional award of RIBA part 1, and 4 years of growth and experience within a top London architectural firm.

You will:

  • Have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a team environment, supporting the overall team chemistry
  • Be approachable, make sure that you understand what you have been asked to do and why you are doing it.
  • In collaboration with other members of a project team, respond to client requirements by preparing, reviewing and refining building design through various media such as 3D modelling, drawings and model making (LSBU website).

Your Approach:

  • Take responsibility for part of a project under supervision and manage your time. Develop a strong sense of ownership and background knowledge of your project(s) and tasks
  • Be an active participant in a transparent, collaborative, and inclusive approach to the design process taking part in regular team briefings, pinning up work in progress, actively seek formal and informal input
  • Demonstrate design awareness and an appreciation of decisions by others

Your Work:

  • Work with architects and other professional contractors to competently design the built environment and deliver architectural projects across multiple scheme stages. Under supervision you will understand strategic briefings.  Through sketch imagery, study models and appropriate digital media you will understand how to negotiate client objectives and project constraints. You will contribute to feasibility studies, conceptual and technical proposals, details for construction phases. You will produce design information, schedules, specifications, design visuals, reports, digital and hard copy presentations documents.
  • Work under the supervision of an architect, senior architect or Project / Studio Leader who has the overall responsibility for delivering a project. You will understand the design process, ensuring that developing ideas are founded with a rigorous approach and a detailed understanding of the constraints and opportunities that influence a project
  • Work in collaboration with the following consultants: Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Interior Designers, Landscape Architects, Project Managers, Town Planning Authorities, Heritage consultants, Builders, Building Control Inspectors, Party Wall Surveyors, Carpenters, Joiners and materials suppliers across all aspects of the construction industry.
  • Being an apprentice will allow you to gain experience and learn new skills from ‘on the job’ training. At work we will support you with mentoring, in-house training, Continuous Professional Development (CPD as a resource). You will be expected to:
  • Self-learn, demonstrate an ability to progress design thinking
  • Ensure that agreed tasks are completed to the highest standards
  • Storyboard and programme key tasks to manage the expectations of others
  • Attend meetings, ensure that you have appropriate material to hand and that you fully understand its content
  • Actively engage with studio procedures
  • Contribute to the vitality of the Studio
  • Be always a role model both inside and outside the studio

Desired Qualifications:

  • A Level BBC or
  • BTEC National Diploma DDM or
  • Access to HE qualifications with 15 Distinction 30 Merit or
  • Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 128 UCAS points (must be include an Art or Design subject)

  • A portfolio of work and a cover letter
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C grade, including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above)

Duration:

The course is 4 years part-time. Future Prospects:

After successful completion of the Architectural Apprentice Level 6, you can progress to the next stage to becoming a Chartered Architect.  The next stage would be to commence the level 7 apprenticeship – equivalent to RIBA Part 2 in Architecture which is the equivalent to a Masters level qualification. Following that the RIBA Professional Practice Part 3 qualification is required to become a Chartered Architect.

To become an Architect in the UK, individuals must hold ARB (Architectural Registration Board) prescribed qualifications at Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 levels. ARB-prescribed qualifications meet the standards that lead to registration as an architect in the UK. https://arb.org.uk/   Only those who are appropriately qualified and registered with ARB can legally use the title ‘Architect’ in the UK.
