Job Purpose: The Associate provides proactive leadership, guidance and development for all the members of the In Ex Design team, in all aspects of how projects are delivered and with high level responsibility for architectural quality, information quality, client relationships, profitability and resourcing. They are the champion of the vision of the practice, and carry out their duties in accordance with the RIBA Code of Conduct.

Location: The office is at Studio 10, Woodbury Business Park, Woodbury, Exeter, EX5 1AY, but the role does not have to be office based full time. Part time home-working and flexible hours considered.

Remuneration: Salary commensurate with skills and experience.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Leading the internal multi-discipline design team and ensuring that every member of the team buys into the vision of the practice.

  • Identifying gaps in project programmes, and bringing in high end new business to maintain the practice’s workload, and converting leads into projects, alongside the Director.

  • Providing high level oversight and experience to Project Architects, Interior Designers and Landscape Designers and to guide and develop the design team.

  • Providing support, development, assistance and advice to the design team.

  • Proactively developing high quality spatial, architectural and operational designs both independently and within the studio to meet the vision of the practice and client’s brief.

  • Designing and specifying high quality interior products such as kitchens and joinery.

  • Support and assist Project Architects and other team members to deal with site specific problems and issues; to impart advice, guidance and experience on issue resolution, client management, risk management and problem solving.

  • Identifying risks in projects for both the practice and the client.

  • Managing and fostering strong relationships with consultants and contractor teams.

  • Continuously looking for and actioning opportunities to increase efficiencies and improvements in operational and design terms across the practice.

  • Committing to the continual development of skills through CPD and training [as identified in reviews].

  • Delivering projects that are safe, cost effective and minimise negative impacts on the environment doing their anticipated life-cycle.

  • Carrying out the role in accordance with your training under the Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice in Architecture.

  • Promoting the highest possible image of the practice in line with company vision through all spoken, written and drawn information.

Key Skills:

  • At least 10 years post qualification experience at Project Architect / Associate level.

  • Willing to make a long term contribution to the successful growth of the practice.

  • Confident and ambitious.

  • Organised and proficient use of CAD software.

  • Thorough technical detailing skills.

  • Excellent understanding of UK consents and regulations.

  • Exceptional spoken, written and drawing (both hand and CAD) communication skills.

  • Responsible for effective time and daily task management commensurate with level of experience.

  • Reasonable knowledge of, and abide by, all laws and regulations relating to health and safety as they apply to the design, construction and use of building projects.

  • Natural on-site problem solving abilities.

  • Skilled in problem and dispute resolution.

  • Ability to inspire others to deliver the creative vision of the practice.

  • Natural ability to lead and manage teams.

  • Ability to produce final construction level resolution of information.

  • Excellent attention to design detail.

  • Act competently, conscientiously and responsibly in accordance with your training under the Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice in Architecture and apply reasonable standards of skill, knowledge and care in the performance of work.

  • Thorough understanding of space and how it is used.

  • Clear understanding of contracts, and contractual roles.

  • Inquisitive and adaptable to new technologies and solutions.

  • Ability to report clearly and accurately .

  • Understanding the applications of sustainable design.
