The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is a global professional membership body driving excellence in architecture. The organisation serves its members and society in order to deliver better buildings and places, stronger communities and a sustainable environment. The RIBA delivers key services to members, as well as advancing architecture more generally through its awards, library, gallery, public programme and website. Being inclusive, ethical, environmentally aware and collaborative underpins all that the RIBA does. Following an extensive review, our new governance structure has seen the creation of a new Board of Trustees which has responsibility for the oversight of the executive management of the RIBA. This is an historic shift with the organisation now having a non-executive board with a mix of skills specifically tailored for its future needs. The world, industry, architects’ profession and our institute are experiencing challenging times and the new Chair of the Board of Trustees will play a key role in working with the President, the Council, to who the Board is accountable and the Executive to define the vision and set the strategic direction. Both the Council and new Board are keen to develop a collaborative and effective working relationship with each other.

The RIBA is now seeking exceptional candidates for the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees. The Chair will be a “leader amongst leaders”, and understand the RIBA’s aims, objectives and culture as a professional body. They will have experience and knowledge of the profession and be preferably from within the sector. The post-holder will be collaborative, empathetic and demonstrate a sensitive and diplomatic style with all stakeholders. The Chair will see that the Board implements best practice governance processes and ensures the RIBA’s assets, finances and property portfolio are properly managed. The Chair will be responsible for Board performance and leads the Board in its accountability to RIBA Council and in holding the Executive to account.

The post-holder will need to be able to create the right environment for a high performing, united Board of Trustees capable of making sound yet ambitious decisions. Candidates for this role will bring senior strategic leadership experience gained in a similarly complex and high-profile organisation.  They will have a deep understanding of governance, ideally gained through experience of working at Board level in a non-executive capacity.

The RIBA is a progressive employer, committed to developing a diverse workforce. We encourage applications from all sections of society and welcome requests for flexible working across our organisation.

Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to the RIBA on this appointment.  For further information about the role, including details about how to apply, please visit www.saxbam.com/appointments using reference EAZQB  Alternatively telephone +44 (0)20 7227 0880 (during office hours).  Applications should be received by noon on Monday 19 October.
