In conjunction with our member organisation, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), CBBC is currently looking to recruit a candidate for the following position, which will be based in Shanghai.

As Business Development Manager, you will oversee and manage country and/or regional operations, develop business and significantly increase membership. You will ensure smooth business operations and adhere to the RIBA’s values, standards, regulations and guidelines.

Main Responsibilities

  • Working with the Director of International to shape and deliver the business development plan for China
  • Drive increased revenue and portfolio to achieve the growth strategy in targeted areas
  • Engage with stakeholders to support potential business opportunities and implement actions that will position the RIBA with differentiated advantage
  • Develop a programme of activities and represent the RIBA at key networking events to raise the Institute’s profile, build local networks and champion the work of architects
  • Recognise and recommend improvements to existing processes and marketing activities to improve membership recruitment and retention by creating value for members
  • Using knowledge of the market and competitors, identify and develop the RIBA’s unique value propositions and differentiators
  • Monitor and regularly report on key performance indicators and management processes within areas of responsibility and take appropriate action to achieve improved service delivery and business objectives
  • Promote the values of the RIBA amongst architectural stakeholders both regionally and internationally
  • Lead on any other business development activities as agreed by the Director of International
  • The post-holder may be required to undertake other duties of similar level and responsibility as may be required.

Useful information

The International team is responsible for the RIBA’s day-to-day activity in our four international regions outside the UK - the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Asia and Australasia, including joining up all RIBA activities that have an international reach. 

Due to the nature of international work, cultural sensitivity is expected of the post-holder together with flexibility to occasionally work outside normal hours of 9-5 which would be agreed by prior arrangement.

The post-holder is also required to support the team’s overarching financial target and outcomes.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • Educated to Bachelor or Master degree level or with equivalent business experience
  • At least 5 years of experience in the sector and a good understanding of architecture and the built environment
  • Strong understanding and exceptional insight into the key business drivers and strategic challenges and opportunities in architecture and the wider built environment in the specific country and/or region 
  • Fluency in English and Mandarin
  • Demonstrable ability to produce results to demanding deadlines and working on numerous key issues simultaneously, prioritising effectively
  • Ability to command respect and communicate a clear vision, driving service and operational standards
  • Highly consultative, a confident negotiator with excellent communication skills
  • Driven to exceed targets and work within tight deadlines
  • Highly collaborative in approach and will enjoy the prospect of being innovative and able to influence membership growth in new markets

The job holder will report administratively to CBBC’s office Shanghai, and functionally will report to and be supported by Director of International, RIBA (UK).

Benefits and conditions of employment

CBBC offer competitive packages which include basic gross salary, social insurance (CBBC cover both employee and company contributions), medical insurance, and generous leave entitlement.

The gross annual package for this position is approximately RMB 234K – 260K with annual pro rata leave entitlement of 22-days for Chinese nationals.
