Job Details

We are looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and experienced Heritage Consultant to join our London and South-East regional team, based in London. This is an exciting opportunity to help manage change to significant places and to contribute to the conservation and enhancement of historic sites. We are looking for someone who can work as part of the regional team, as well as take on responsibility for their own project work and, where appropriate, manage contributions by other staff and sub-consultants.

You will work under the supervision of a designated line manager within the Heritage Consultancy Team. You will provide heritage advice and guidance, undertake research and assessment of buildings and sites within the historic environment, and compose and contribute to various reports such as Conservation Management Plans, Historic Buildings Appraisals and Impact Assessments. You will manage small scale projects in your own right, prepare fee proposals and contribute to larger bids.

Excellent written and oral communication skills are vital, as is the ability to adapt to a variety of circumstances. A can-do attitude and an ability to engage creatively and originally in all aspects of the job are essential. Contributing to the practice and the promotion of good heritage conservation will extend beyond project work. Work will be mostly within the region although some longer distance travel and overnight stays may be occasionally necessary.

Tasks

  • Give honest and practical advice relating to heritage assets to our own internal team of architects and to external clients and stakeholders
  • Undertake desk-based and archival research
  • Carry out on-site, non-intrusive investigations of sites, including building recording (where necessary) and photographic survey
  • Have a clear understanding of and experience working with current legislation including the National Planning Policy Framework and current guidance from Historic England
  • Prepare competent, clear, and well written documents, such as:
    • Conservation Statements and Management Plans
    • Gazetteers
    • Archaeological Desk-based Assessments
    • Heritage Impact Assessments
    • Conservation Area, Character Area, Townscape or other Appraisals
    • Historic Building Appraisals
    • Environmental Statement Chapters
  • Manage the delivery of smaller projects and to contribute to the delivery of larger projects, working up to managing the delivery of larger projects
  • Contribute to business development within the region and to growing our local client base
  • Contribute to tenders and fee proposals for new work
  • Regularly work as a member of a larger team
  • Report on a weekly basis to your designated line manager with regards to tasks, fees and schedules and efficiently manage your own workload
  • Carry out 35 hours of Continuing Professional Development each year

Previous experience of working as a heritage consultant in a commercial environment is vital. With a degree in a related subject, you will have at least 2 years’ experience carrying out archival, desk-based and on-site research and producing well written documents, managing your own workload and running projects. Experience of costing and budgeting for work and building your own work winning network would be advantageous. Membership(s) of professional institutions, such as the IHBC or CIfA and a UK driving licence (for travel to remote sites) are desirable.

Company

We work as one family of many experts: architects, designers, heritage leaders and specialist consultants.

Ideally placed in regions covering the UK and in Asia Pacific, we undertake projects across eight core sectors.

Clients come to us when they need to make sense of their project. These complex scenarios often involve sensitive sites, listed buildings and admired places. We guide their transformation, and help clients to build new structures and create new spaces through bespoke design.

For decades, we have been making sure that our clients’ buildings are designed for use today and for future generations.
