Millar + Howard Workshop is looking for a Project Architect & an enthusiastic Part II Architectural Assistant to join its team near Stroud, Gloucestershire.

We are an innovative practice exploring the collision of digital technology and craft, investigating new ways of designing and living for a changing planet.

We are looking for architects with a similar interest to help produce beautiful buildings in innovative ways and enthusiastic Part II’s to work on a range of exciting projects alongside our more experienced staff. The roles will be very practical, and you will get to learn and experience all stages of a project.

We are looking for individuals who are interested in contributing to the continuing improvement and advancement of the practice. We have a strong studio-based design ethos and encourage a good work-life balance.

Who we are looking for:
Architect

  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK
  • Architects with at least 5 years post part 3 experience who want to take a proactive role in the running of the practice whilst also having a key project running role
  • Individuals with experience working in a design-led practice with a passion for innovation and craft.
  • Strong technical knowledge with the ability to integrate bespoke design into thorough tender packages.
  • Contract management skills with the experience of managing traditional contracts onsite.
  • An aptitude for team-leading and mentoring with a desire to share skills and knowledge.
  • Current driving licence with ownership or access to a car essential

Experience in co-living, coworking, and community facilitation

Experienced Part III's – Salary £40,000+ depending on experience

Part II

  • Individuals with experience working in a design-led practice with a passion for innovation and craft.
  • Strong communication and graphic skills with attention to detail
  • Confident working independently and taking on high levels of responsibility
  • Keen to contribute to the collaborative and friendly studio culture
  • Enthusiastic and show initiative
  • Working knowledge of the UK Building Regulations and Plan of works.

Part II's – starting salary £24,000 with opportunities for progression

Location:

The office is based in a characterful converted mill building along a canal in the Golden Valley of the beautiful Cotswolds, percolating in a rich cultural heritage of art, craft, and industry. We are in a rural location with limited public transport.

An overflowing bowl of fruit, an HTC Vive, a Wikihouse Joint, design for a contemporary sedan chair/office pod, 360° camera and a Microsoft Surface Studio.

In our Past:

Helsinki Wood Course, working with Geoffrey Bawa, a Passive House certified treehouse on Grand Designs, an award-winning rammed earth wedding venue using soil excavated onsite, buildings we designed and built with our own hands including a chapel set in the orchard where Laurie Lee scrumped apples and building with driftwood on a small island off the coast of Canada.

Our Present:

Photogrammetry and Virtual Reality have revolutionised our practice, we’re designing a treehouse hotel, working on a Grade 1 listed manor house, a countryside coworking, and flexible working warehouse, contemporary, contextual and environmentally thoughtful homes, exploring design for disassembly, circular economy and taking on the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge whilst evolving our practice of architecture.

Where we hope to be in 3 years time:

Develop our niche as rural innovators, continuing to design and oversee highly crafted buildings designed using cutting edge technology, whilst more rigorously understanding and monitoring the performance of our buildings in use. Diversifying our practise, project sectors and client base, whilst challenging the wider construction and housing industry with different models for well-designed and affordable homes and construction techniques.
